We’ll make Sanwo-Olu jobless, Lagos PDP tells Wike

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has informed Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State that it will render his counterpart in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, jobless in 2023.

The party was reacting to the purported endorsement of Sanwo-Olu for second term by Wike during his visit to Lagos.

The party, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening by its Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, said it would have expressed disappointment if Wike had attended any event “without his usual rant of a drowning man who will clutch at straw.”

He said, “I only wonder how Governor Wike, who didn’t support Jandor and at the same time couldn’t stop him from picking the party ticket in Lagos, despite his supposed might within the PDP, would apportion to himself the decision of generality of Lagosians in the forthcoming election.

“While we won’t but acknowledge Governor Wike’s developmental strides in Rivers State which have witnessed influx of other state chief executives including Sanwo-Olu for commissioning, it is worrisome that Wike will call Sanwo-Olu a performer without asking how many times he has invited anyone to Lagos for the commissioning of ordinary borehole in his almost four years in office as Governor.

“My dear Governor and leader, we promise to render Sanwo-Olu jobless and send him to the club of you former Governors next year. Only God, who has seen Jandor and Lagos PDP this far, and the generality of Lagosians, can determine his fate at the polls in 2023, not your endorsement.

“We will continue to sell our breath of fresh air agenda to Lagosians with the promise of a better tomorrow. Lagos needs a breath of fresh air!”

Wike endorses Sanwo-Olu for second term

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has endorsed his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for second term in office.

This was disclosed by Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, in a terse statement on Tuesday.

“Breaking: Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike endorses Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for second term in office. Details later,” Akosile wrote.

The endorsement comes despite Wike’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party, having a governorship candidate in Lagos, in the person of Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has received approval to build the Badagry Deep Seaport which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in August.

A statement signed by Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said the approval, which was given at the just concluded Lagos State Economic Summit (Ehingbeti 2022), authorises and provides the legal basis for the concession of the Badagry Deep Seaport following the issuance of the Full Business Case Certificate by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission last April.

According to the statement, the $2.5bn project, which would be funded through Public Private Partnership, would be built on approximately 496 hectares. It would have 2,470m quay length container terminal, 560m quay length break bulk terminal, 360m quay length OSB terminal and minimum of 18m depth.

It was expected to generate 250,000 direct jobs, enhance government revenue and operate under a build, operate and transfer concession agreement.

Speaking on the development, Sanwo-Olu said the Seaport would boost Lagos State’s logistics and commerce capability.

He said, “We are excited that Lagos is on the way to having another deep seaport on the Western side of the city. Before the end of this year, we will be commissioning the Lekki Deep Seaport on the Eastern side. What it means is that, what we have been suffering as a logistics and commerce hub of West Africa will be addressed when we increase maritime infrastructure that improves turnaround time in this sector.”

With this, Lagos is assured to remain the economic and commercial nerve centre of the entire sub-Saharan Africa.

Sanwo-Olu also signed also a Memorandum of Understanding with Siemens Energy Limited and German-owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit to set up an Energy Training Centre of Excellence at the Government Technical College in Ikorodu.

The training, which would be conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, would provide a needs-based technical and vocational education to over 16,000 young people between ages 15 and 35.

The programme was expected to produce highly skilled industry technicians with modern practice-oriented. Sanwo-Olu said a 30 per cent slot would be allocated to female candidates to enhance women participation in engineering education.
