Photos: South African gold mine collapses, trapping more than 100 miners

More than 100 people are trapped underground at a gold mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa after a goldmine caved in today Friday, February 5. In a statement issued by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the labour body says about 115 staff are trapped after the main offices at Makonjwaan Gold Mine caved in at around 8.40am.
Spokesman Manzini Zungu says AMCU leadership are en route to the mine. He has heard unconfirmed reports that 3 people may have died. Zungu says it is possible that the incident was caused by a sinkhole, although Barberton is not known for such geological issues. Currently, says Zungu, it is not clear how far underground the miners are.
He adds emergency services should already be on site to rescue those who are trapped. According to an update by Reuters, some 49 miners have so far been rescued. "Mine rescue services are still busy on scene to rescue the remaining miners underground," emergency services group ER24 said in a statement

Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, says Nigeria will have to increase its input in farming or risk facing her citizens starve to death by 2050. Ogbeh said this during the defence of the Ministry of Agriculture's 2016 budget before the senate committee on Agriculture yesterday February 4th.
"We have written to state governments to encourage them to develop dams and canals so that agriculture becomes an all year round activity and it is not confined to the rainy season alone.
Besides, by 2050, Nigeria population will be very close to 500 million at the current rate of growth. This is just 34 years from now. If we carry on at the current rate of one crop per year, with very low mechanization, Nigerians run the risk of starving to death”he said

Rapper The Game loses $10 million sexual assault case

Priscilla Rainey, a former contestant on the VH1 dating reality show, She's Got Game sued The Game for $10 million back in August 2015 for sexually assaulting her. She demanded $10million pay out for her emotional, physical, and psychological suffering. And this week, the judge ruled in favour of Priscilla. This is happening just two weeks after The Game flaunted his $13million account balance.
According to Bossip, Rainey said that last May, while shooting the show, she went out on an after-hours date with the rapper. She claimed that she went to a local bar in Illinois where The Game was out of control and drunk and high.
She said during their night out at a bar The Game sexually assaulted her on several occasions, including him forcefully reaching his hand inside her dress to rub her bare vagina and buttocks. She said she never gave him permission to touch her so she felt degraded by the unwanted touching.
Priscilla’s lawyer, Adam Horowitz, told the judge:
“My client was damaged by the sexual assault. She’s been in therapy. Now, she’s anxious to tell her story
However game did not show up for any court case or acknowledged the lawsuit. He called it a bluff, a frivolous and a vengeful retaliation for not making it to the end of the show. This made the presiding judge to rule in favour of the plaintiff.. he was found liable by default.
The next court hearing has been scheduled on the 24th of February 2016, in which all Priscilla will have to prove to a judge why she’s entitled to $10 million in damages.

12 year old Indian girl has had over 1,000 giant ants removed from her ears

This 12-year-old girl above has had more than 1,000 giant ants removed from her ears within the last 5 months, after doctors find them nesting in her drum canal.
Shreya Darji, from Deesa, in Gujarat, western India, has around ten live ants crawl out of her ears daily, her parents say. Shreya's problem first started as an irritation in her ear in August last year, and when she visited her local hospital, doctors found the ants inside her ear canal.
So far, doctors have removed hundreds of ants, but despite trying 'everything' the problem persists and the ants continue to breed.
A video filmed with an endoscopic camera shows a doctor removing what appears to be dead ants from her ear.
Her desperate parents say they have tried everything, from traditional medical aids to witch doctors, but the ants keep emerging from her ears.
Dr Jawahar Talsania, 58, senior Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon, in Gujarat, said:
‘We have conducted all possible scans on the child including an MRI and CT scan but they are all normal. We cannot find any abnormality in her ears.
'She doesn’t experience any kind of pain - despite the ants biting her - and no damage has been found to the eardrums.
‘The family live a normal life and they have a healthy environment so we can’t even blame their living conditions. We’ve not seen anything like this in our medical history.’
Dr Jawahar explained that he has tried to even suffocate the ants with drops but they continue to breed.
‘We don’t believe the ants are laying eggs inside the ear as we've not spotted a queen ant inside. We are completely perplexed,’ he said, adding he has already used a camera inside the ear to check for an egg chamber.
Father Sanjay Darji, 40, who runs a small television repair business, in Gujarat, said his daughter would sit in school and ants often crawled out of her ear.
He’s terrified the condition is getting worse and not better.
He said:
‘I have done everything I can. I have taken her to the best doctors but they have failed to solve the problem. I just hope things get better.
'I’m worried about her future and how this will affect her studies. She is a brilliant child and she’s already missed a lot of school.
Other children in her school and community are teasing her and it’s already making her feel bad. I need this problem cured as quickly as possible before it affects her confidence in life.’

Man turns himself in 6 months after he killed his cousin over a girl, says he had no peace of mind

22-year-old Ndifreke Joseph Clement from Akwa Ibom state who killed his 23-year-old cousin, Ubong Edet, over a girl surrendered himself to police six months after he committed the murder.
Clement said he slit his cousin’s throat after beating him to coma because Edet slept with his girlfriend in August 2015.
He said:
“I cannot remember the exact date now, but it occurred in a night in August 2015 in the one room apartment we shared. On that day, I returned from work to meet the door locked.
“I knocked on the door and waited for over five minutes before my cousin could come to open the door. When I went into the room, I saw my girlfriend weeping and blood running from her nostrils.
“I asked her what happened and she said Ubong beat, wounded and forcefully had sex with her. But after opening the door for me, Ubong went away and did not come back until very late in the night.
“When I asked him why he did what he did to my girlfriend, he started punching me and I retaliated.
“We fought for a very long time before I could subdue him. I then picked my cow-butchering knife and cut his throat, carried his dead body and dumped it in the bush very close to the house and threw the knife into the pit toilet.
“I have brought myself to the police even when nobody knew that I killed him. I have come to plead for forgiveness because since I killed my cousin, I no longer have peace of mind. I am always disturbed in my mind and dream.”
The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said the suspect would be arraigned in court soon.

Man shot by cop awarded $23.1m

A federal jury awarded $23.1 million on Wednesday to a 22-year-old black man who was unarmed when he was shot and paralyzed by a sheriff's deputy, but Florida lawmakers will have to approve any award above $200,000.
The six-woman, two-man jury ruled after 3 and half hours of deliberation that Palm Beach County Sheriff's Sgt. Adams Lin violated Dontrell Stephens' civil rights when he shot him in September 2013.
Lin, who had stopped Stephens for riding his bicycle into traffic, testified that he shot Stephens four times because he reached for his waistband with his left hand and then flashed a dark object that he thought was a small handgun. Stephens testified that he was raising his hands when Lin opened fire for no reason. Video from the dashboard camera in Lin's patrol car showed Stephens' left hand was empty and a cellphone was in his right hand.
An appeal is expected and Lin's attorneys could ask Magistrate Judge Barry S. Seltzer to reduce the damages. The jury apparently rejected Lin's claim that he had made an "objectively reasonable mistake" when he shot Stephens. The jurors declined comment as they left the courthouse as did Lin and his attorneys. Lin sat stoically as the verdict was read, while Stephens wept as he was wheeled into the courtroom minutes later. He declined comment.
Jack Scarola, Stephens' lead attorney, said the verdict is a victory not only for his client but for law enforcement officers who have been unfairly stigmatized by unjustified violence against young black men by a small minority of their colleagues. He said the verdict will help restore faith in the justice system among the African-American community.
"This will help good police officers do their duty and be far more effective in their communities," Scarola said.
Under Florida law, the Legislature has to approve any lawsuit payment against a government agency that exceeds $200,000. In the past, legislators have been reluctant to do that, even in non-controversial cases. For example, it took about three years for the Legislature to approve a $3.5 million settlement for a Jacksonville teenager who was paralyzed when a large branch from a city-owned tree broke off and hit him in the head, paralyzing him. The city, admitting fault, had asked for him to be paid.
In another case, it took more than four years for the Legislature to approve a $10.7 million settlement for a teenager who was permanently disabled when a speeding sheriff's deputy plowed into her car. A jury had awarded her $30 million.
Scarola said legislators "would not be fulfilling their sworn obligation" if they failed to approve Stephens' payment. He said they would be overriding a jury that heard all the evidence and found that a "major injustice" had been done, and condemning Stephens to a life of poverty and suffering.
Stephens' attorneys had said from the beginning that they would seek more than $5 million to cover his medical treatment and future care, but they did not mention the amount they would seek for pain and suffering until closing arguments to the jury Wednesday. Attorney Darryl Lewis told jurors Stephens will have more than $6 million in medical and care expenses during his lifetime, and that he deserved at least $18 million for his pain and suffering. An expert testified that he could spend more than 50 years in his condition.
The case was among several nationwide that have sparked debate about the deaths of unarmed black males following encounters with law enforcement officers. Seltzer had instructed jurors that they could consider only the specific circumstances of Stephens' shooting and no other. Lin, an Asian-American, was cleared of criminal wrongdoing by sheriff's investigators and local prosecutors and was later promoted to sergeant.
Lin, 38 and a 12-year veteran of the sheriff's office, testified that he stopped Stephens for riding his bicycle into traffic and because he didn't recognize him from the neighborhood. Stephens, who admitted smoking marijuana earlier that morning and once served 90 days in jail for a felony drug conviction, had been riding to a friend's house after a trip to a convenience store.
In the dashcam video, Lin speeds up his patrol car to catch Stephens as he pedals down a West Palm Beach residential street. Stephens sees Lin and turns into the parking lot of a duplex, hops off his bike and puts it down, his right hand holding his cellphone. Stephens moves behind a car and both men are now outside the camera's view. Stephens testified Lin already had his gun drawn and shot him after he raised his hands. Lin denied that, saying he only drew and fired after Stephens flashed his cellphone like it was a gun.
Scarola told the jury that Lin must have already had his gun pointed at Stephens because he couldn't have seen the cellphone, perceived it as a gun, drawn his own gun and fired in the two seconds Stephens was out of view of the dashcam video.

Presidency slams reports that Pres Buhari hasn't achieved any of his campaign promises

The Presidency responded to reports that President Buhari has only achieved 1 out of his 222 electoral promises .
The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, reacted by saying that the president has successfully blocked the leakages in the system within the last seven months he has been in office.
He said:
“Doesn’t the President deserve credit for this and other efforts to confront the monster of corruption?"
"He is making good strides towards improving governance by tackling corruption. Till date, a good number of persons believed to have collectively stolen billions from taxpayers have been arrested and are facing the courts.
“We are working with our allies across the world from Britain and America to France and Germany to China and the UAE to source, locate and repatriate misappropriated funds.“So far, an escrow account has been opened for money that is being returned. This is only the start. The return of stolen funds is important, but it is just as critical to ensure that those who seek to steal realise that no longer will there be such impunity in Nigeria.”
He also condemned recent false reports by the Centre for Democracy and Development adding that the centre was mischievous to attribute promises Pres. Buhari did not make during his campaign.
He said:
“The latest CDD episode is a shocking reminder to their failed attempt to hold the President to ‘100 promises in 100 days’ which disastrously crashed on the head of the proponent.
“The elevation of the act to a new high of 220 promises is a knee-jerk reaction that seeks to play to the gallery and score points against the President.”

US President Obama tells Muslims: We are ‘One American family’

US President Barack Obama visited a Maryland mosque on Wednesday to deliver a simple message at a complex time. “We are one American family,” President Obama told the gathered crowd at the Islamic Society of Baltimore. “We will rise and fall together.”
Obama sought to reassure Muslim Americans that the country considers their community essential to the makeup of society, condemn the claim that all Muslims are terrorists, call on the Muslim community to also condemn terrorism, affirm religious freedom, and explain to the whole of America what Islam is and isn’t.
And with the rise of ISIS and in the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, the president had a lot of ground to cover in the 45 minutes he had to speak.
“We have to reaffirm that most fundamental of truths—we are all God’s children, all born equal with inherent dignity,” Obama said.
He started by telling the story of Islam in the U.S. from a historical perspective, bringing the audience back to the nation’s founding. “Islam,” Obama said, “has always been a part of America.” Muslim slaves ripped from Africa and brought to the U.S., Obama said, did not leave their religion at the shore. He added that religious liberty guaranteed in the Constitution didn’t come with an asterisk, quoting Thomas Jefferson’s declaration that “the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan [or Muslim]” were all to be protected.
Looking out across the room, he marked the contributions of Muslims within American society. He asked the service-members in the audience to stand and thanked them for their service. He cheered Ibtihaj Muhammad, the champion fencer who will become the first U.S. athlete to compete while wearing a hijab during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
“Muslim Americans are some of the most resilient and patriotic Americans you’ll ever meet, he said.
And through the personal letters he gets from Muslims of all ages across the country, he noted the fear many feel just being themselves.
President Obama spoke of a mother whose “heart cries every night” thinking about how her child could face taunts and bullying at school.
He mentioned a 13-year-old girl from Ohio who simply wrote, “I’m scared.” Before the speech, the president got a sense of how Muslims are feeling first hand. He sat down with about a dozen people from across the country for open dialogue about the state of their community.
Obama slammed “inexcusable” anti-Muslim rhetoric. “An attack on one faith is an attack on all our faiths,” he said. “We can’t be bystanders to bigotry. Together, we have to show that America truly protects all faiths.”
The president’s historic first visit to a mosque while in office had been long awaited by many, but for some—like Sabah Muktar, the young woman who introduced the President on Wednesday, it came just in time.
“This visit by our president is an affirmation to all Muslims we are just as American as any other,” she said.

Rick Ross shows off wall-to-wall rare Air Jordans in 109-room mansion

Rapper Rick Ross was placed on house arrest last year after being accused of pistol-whipping an employee.
But as Rick Ross opened up his lavish 109-room Georgia mansion to The Coveteur, it became clear that the ruling was far from a punishment.
Featuring a dedicated footwear closet lined with wall-to-wall Air Jordans, stacks of luxury goods, and plenty of gaudy gold, the home has every amenity a rapper with some unexpected downtime could wish for.
Rick Ross has the type of trainer collection that will make any sneakerhead salivate, with wall-to-wall rare Air Jordans and other sneakers in several large wardrobe spaces.
He even has a designated space for leather good from German luxury brand Modern Creation Munich complete with bags, luggage, jackets and even several stuffed animals featuring with their signature pattern. Plus a rather large jewellery collection and several Versace items in his home.
Rick certainly seemed to be excited about the piece on him as he promoted it by sharing a photo from the shoot with the caption: '@thecoveteur #ROZAY article is up. @jakerosenberg @vanitygroupnyc.'
Rick was sentenced to house arrest last July, after spending a week in jail following his conviction for hitting a gardener for throwing a party there while he was out of town.
After three months at home, his lawyers successfully argued that the ruling was costing him money, and was not needed as his victim did not live nearby.
Back in February of 2014, the Miami-based rapper spent $5.8 million to buy the foreclosed Georgia mansion of former boxing champ Evander Holyfield.
He purchased the home which the 53-year-old retired fighter had to sell to a bank at a public auction as part of a foreclosure for $7.5 million in 2012.
The enormous 54,000 square-foot mansion sits on 235 acres and is the largest single family home in the state of Georgia.
Located outside of Atlanta, the compound features 109 rooms, including 12 bedrooms and an astonishing 21 bathrooms.
Other amenities include a bowling alley, home theater and a 350,000 gallon pool, which apparently is the largest in the nation.
If that wasn't lavish enough, there's also a seven-stall barn, baseball field with lights and a scoreboard, an indoor pool, separate boxing gym, recording studio, and guest house.
Evander once claimed the home cost more than $1 million annually to maintain with an electric bill reportedly costing $17,000 a month.
