Video of Desmond Elliot speaking on the negative impact of social media

A video of Desmond Elliot speaking on the negative impact of social media at the Lagos State House of Assembly has been made public.

Days ago, social media influencer, Dr Olufunmilayo had stated that the Lagos State House of Assembly "is developing a bill to regulate and control speech on social media" and that Desmond Elliot "is said to be one of those pushing it".

Desmond Elliot released a video denying this allegation.

Dr Olufunmilayo hit back, asking Desmond Elliot to release evidence of what he truly said (read here).

A video of Desmond's statement at the House of Assembly has now been made public. It shows him calling on the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly to "address certain things" like "the Nigerian youth, the social media, the social influencers."

He added: "All of these are making the narratives that we are seeing today. Except we're joking with ourselves. Social media, though good, has its negative impacts."

He expressed concerns about the way Nigerian youths curse on social media.

The former actor turned politician said: "When I went through the comment, I could not believe it Mr Speaker. The curses, the abuses from children. And I ask myself 'Is this Nigeria? What is going on?' Children cursing?"

He continued: "Mr Speaker, in the next five years, Nigerian is gone if we don't start now."

Can you let the whole world see the video of what you said about social media regulation - Popular social media commentator, Dr Olufunmilayo fires back at Desmond Elliot

Popular social media commentator, Dr Olufunmilayo has fired back at Desmond Elliot after the lawmaker representing Surulere constituency denied pushing for regulation and control of free spech on social media.

LIB reported earlier that the lawmaker had denied allegation of being one of those pushing a bill to stiffle free speech.

However reacting to the lawmaker's denial of the allegation, Dr Olufunmilayo dared him to release to the world what he said about celebrities and influencers, and also let the whole world see the video of what he said about social media regulation.

Sharing a link which supposedly captured the Lagos State House of Assembly plenary today, the social media commentator alleged that Desmond Elliot blamed celebrities/influencers for the carnage and went ahead to advocate for a social media regulation bill. He also alleged that the video evidence on the website of the Lagos state house of assembly has been taken down.

He tweeted in response;

On today’s plenary session, I have reliable information Desmond Elliot blamed celebs/influencers for the carnage and went ahead to advocate social media regulation bill.

The link to the video is https://lagoshouseofassembly.gov.ng/live/

It has been tampered with. Can they pls release the video?

Dear Desmond Elliot Thanks for your quick correction. In the spirit of honesty and transparency, can you please release to the world what you said about celebs and influencers, can you also let the whole world see the video of what you said about social media regulation? Thanks

Dear Desmond Elliot, If the State House of Assembly have no powers on social media regulation, then why bring it up at plenary? Why advocate for something you have no powers over, as a lawmaker? Why blame celebs/influencers for saying what everybody saw but govt wants to cover?

Dear Desmond Elliot This is not a fight. Or a quarrel. It’s a very simple logic.

•Why did you accuse celebs/influencers of “hate speech” today?

•Why did you advocate SM regulation if you have no powers as a state lawmaker?

•Why is the video evidence now gone from the website?

By the way Hope you guys saw the speed at which Desmond Elliot responded to my tweet- despite the fact that he did indeed truly advocate a social media control and attacked celebs/influencers- Did you see the speed? Always learn to speak up. Give these people no breathing space.

Governor Oyetola relaxes 24-hour curfew in Osun state

Governor Gboyega Oyetola has relaxed the 24-hour curfew he imposed in Osun state in the wake of the violence that rocked the state days ago.

The curfew will now run from 8:00pm to 6:00am daily, starting from Thursday October 29. The new directive was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Wole Oyebamiji and released on Wednesday October 28.

The statement read;

“Following the high level of compliance with the 24-hour curfew declared last Saturday to forestall further breakdown of law and order in the State, Osun State Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has approved the relaxation of the curfew period, effective from tomorrow, Thursday, October 29, 2020.

“Consequently, the curfew will now run from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am daily. Security operatives will still remain on the streets to enforce the new curfew directive with a view to further maintaining law and order. Also, all motorcycle operators will now operate from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm daily. This will subsist even after the curfew is completely lifted.

“As we all know, the curfew was never declared in the first instance to inflict hardship on our people but to protect them and return normalcy to the State.

“We appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari and all the security agencies for their various roles in ensuring that normalcy and peace return to our State.

“We commend the residents and citizens of Osun for their show of understanding and cooperation in the last five days of the curfew. We also laud our youths for displaying a high sense of maturity and understanding in calling off any form of protest in light of the prevailing circumstances.

“Government remains committed to the cause of our youths and shall take every necessary step to ensure their welfare.

“Government also commends those who took advantage of the amnesty period to return looted items in line with the Omoluabi ethos for which we are known.

“Whistle Blowers could still reach out to us on 08187187678 for information on looted items. However, effective from tomorrow, Thursday, October 29, anyone found to be in possession of any looted item will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted as earlier announced.

“All citizens and residents are enjoined to be peaceful and be law-abiding as all efforts shall be made to protect them and their property”.

The anarchic situation that came on the country because of the protests led to looting and not poverty — Femi Adesina

Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina has stated that the looting of warehouses and shops across the country was caused by #EndSARS protests and not poverty.

Adesina said this while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday October 29. He insisted that attributing the looting to poverty, was like justifying armed robbery as anarchy ensued after policemen were killed and police stations including private and public properties were burnt.

He said;

“Criminality is criminality. Would it justify armed robbery because the man was poor? Would it justify armed robbery because the man didn’t have money? Just as you cannot justify armed robbery because a man was poor and took a gun to rob another person, you can’t also justify the looting.

“Criminality will always be criminality and mere anarchy promotes criminality. What has happened in the last two or three weeks led to what has happened now. If there was cohesion and tranquillity in society, this wouldn’t happen.

“Therefore, it was corollary to the mere anarchic situation that came on the country because of the protests. If you didn’t have people burning police stations, killing policemen, burning private and public property, you wouldn’t have this spate of looting.

“So, I don’t agree that it is all about poverty. Yes, in any country, you will have at any given time, you will have people who are poor, who are hungry and that is one of the reasons why you have government is to ensure that the number of poor and hungry people is reduced.”

However when it was pointed that Nigeria had become the poverty capital of the world, Femi Adesina averred that it was caused by 60 years of mismanagement of public funds which could not easily be addressed in two years. He added that President Buhari is committed to projects that will lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years.

Public and private schools can reopen Monday November 2 - Lagos state government.

The Lagos State Government has approved the re-opening of schools for all classes in public and private schools across the state beginning from Monday, November 2, 2020 while boarders in public schools are to resume on Sunday, November 1.

The state Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, disclosed this in a statement released on Thursday October 29. The statement in part reads

''The Lagos State Government has approved the re-opening of schools for all classes in public and private schools across the State beginning from Monday, 2nd of November, 2020 while boarders in public schools are to resume on Sunday, 1st of the same month.

This has been an unprecedented year with the recent happenings that have regrettably led to frequent closure of schools with attendant learning disruptions faced by all children.

We pray and hope that there will be no more disruptions in the academic calendar. However, the State Government will always regard the safety of pupils/students, parents and all staff as a matter of priority.

We recommend that when schools resume on Monday, teaching and learning should continue unhindered till the end of the term” she said.
